FUE Hair Transplant

Individual follicle extraction technique.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant technique in which individual follicular units are removed from a donor area — usually the back and sides of the scalp — and implanted into thinning or bald areas.

Treatment overview

Because follicles are taken one by one, FUE leaves small, scattered dot-like marks rather than a linear scar. The design of the hairline and the number of grafts are planned for each person.

Common purposes

  • Restoring density in areas affected by pattern hair loss
  • Reconstructing or refining the hairline
  • Treating some scars or areas of stable hair loss

Who may be suitable?

  • People with stable hair loss and a sufficient donor area
  • Those whose hair loss pattern has been assessed by a specialist
  • People with realistic expectations about density and coverage
  • Some causes of hair loss require medical treatment instead of, or before, a transplant

Suitability is always decided by a specialist after reviewing your health and examining you.

Treatment process

  1. 01

    Before treatment

Photos of your scalp from several angles allow an initial assessment. On the day, the hairline and recipient areas are marked and agreed with you.

  2. 02

    Treatment day

Under local anaesthesia, follicles are extracted from the donor area and placed in the recipient channels. The procedure generally takes most of the day.

  3. 03

    After treatment

Small scabs form in the recipient area and the donor area heals. You receive detailed instructions for the first washes and sleeping position.

  4. 04

    Follow-up

Transplanted hairs commonly shed in the early weeks before new growth begins. Progress is assessed over many months.

Expectations & recovery

01

Redness and mild swelling are common at first.

02

Sport, sun exposure and swimming are usually limited for a period advised by your team.

03

Growth timing and final density differ between individuals.

Results and recovery vary from person to person. No outcome can be guaranteed.

Risks & considerations

Potential benefits

  • Uses your own hair, so results look natural when well planned
  • No linear donor scar
  • Transplanted follicles are generally resistant to pattern hair loss

Risks & considerations

  • The donor supply is limited and must be managed for the long term
  • Possible risks include infection, folliculitis, numbness or poor graft survival
  • Native hair may continue to thin, which can affect the long-term look
  • Further sessions or medical therapy may be recommended
